Frequently Asked Questions
When does your Board next meet?
The Future Fund's Board meets at least three times each year - usually in February, July and November. Dates of Board meetings are decided at the preceding Board meeting, therefore, specific advice regarding timing of the next Board meeting should be sought from Fund staff.
How does the Board decide on the merits of a project?
The Board takes into account a range of factors when making decisions about Future Fund submissions. Factors include:
- The Future Fund's current commitments and priorities
- The opportunities available to Rio Tinto to actively partner with the organisation
- The extent to which the proposed programme contributes towards future benefits and sustainable outcomes for WA
- The extent to which the proposed programme generates benefits to WA that do not presently exist
Can I reapply to the Board if I am unsuccessful with my submission?
The Board does not accept the same submission for consideration within a 12 month period of its decision. It will, however, consider different project submissions from the same organisation.
How do I apply for funding? Is there an application form?
To apply for funding through the Future Fund, potential partners are required to submit a two to three page application addressing key criteria. Information on how to apply and eligibility can be found on the Interested Applicants section of this website. Before submitting an application, potential partners should consider the project’s fit with Future Fund criteria. For help in assessing the suitability of a project, applicants can contact the Future Fund staff.
Submissions will be reviewed within one month of being received and applicants will be notified by mail. Applicants whose submission is being progressed will be contacted by the Manager Community Investment to discuss the project in detail.

Do you only support projects in Western Australia?
Yes. The Future Fund was established to help create a better future for Western Australia. From time to time, the Future Fund does support organisations outside Western Australia, provided the project is specifically focused on Western Australian outcomes. The Future Fund does also occassionally contribute to projects that have outcomes wider than Western Australia - provided that other funding supports the interstate initiatives.
