Key Achievements in 2006

The following is a snapshot of the many key achievements and highlights of our partnerships in 2006.

The State Library of Western Australia

Half of all Western Australian state libraries are now participating in Better Beginnings.

Leadership Western Australia

More than 80 emerging leaders have now graduated from the Leadership WA programme.

Australian Museum

BioMaps fieldwork in the Pilbara is now complete, resulting in the collection of more than 200,000 specimens and the discovery of five new genera (groups of specimen).

Scitech

Kids' Science State celebrated its 10th anniversary by visiting 3,000 students at 15 Pilbara schools in 15 days. The traveling roadshow saw a total of 120,000 Western Australians in 2006.

Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation

More than 70 students have now graduated from Partnerships for Success, with 20 students going to university, more than 35 in apprenticeships and traineeships and 13 entering full-time employment.

WA Community Foundation

The successful partnership with the WA Community Foundation has been extended until 2009.

The Smith Family

Approximately 650 students and their families are currently receiving support from The Smith Family's Learning for Life programme. This includes 30 grandparents who are primary care givers to their grandchildren.

Conservation Volunteers Australia

A new $1 million Future Volunteers partnership was launched, facilitating more than 1,000 days of work by volunteers on key conservation projects in the North West.

WA Museum

Operation Leo has retrieved nine Thylacoleo (marsupial lion) skeletons and more than 60 species of mammals, reptiles and birds estimated to be in excess of 780,000 years old. Operation Bigfoot has retrieved more than 20 fossilised kangaroos (macropods), 10 of which are completely new to science.

Telethon Institute for Child Health Research

Volumes 3 and 4 of the Western Australian Aboriginal Child Health Survey were published and a national symposium to promote healthy pregnancy in indigenous communities was held with the support of the Rio Tinto Child Health Partnership.
